Program Overview

Bishop Absalon

DIS is a non-profit study abroad foundation established in Denmark in 1959, with locations in Copenhagen and Stockholm. DIS provides semester, academic year, and summer programs taught in English, and offers high-impact learning experiences for upper-division undergraduate students from distinguished North American colleges and universities. The intellectually challenging curriculum is broad, cutting edge, and enriched by experiential learning components, including faculty-led study tours across Europe. It provides students with opportunities for meaningful cultural engagement and personal growth, which is further enriched through housing and extracurricular offerings.

Location

Copenhagen
Copenhagen matches 16th-century architecture with modern and inventive urban spaces – well-planned bike lanes, harbor baths, skate parks, food markets, and more.  The Danish capital is changing the global agenda for sustainability, design, architecture, and food. Yet the locals still embrace their cultural roots and gather to celebrate the queen’s birthday outside her palace every year.

Stockholm
Comprised of 14 islands and a transit system that travels across waterways, Stockholm is well connected. While some corners are characteristically urban, others are natural landscapes – making your next cross-country ski adventure or kayaking afternoon within easy reach.

Sweden prides itself on openness, diversity, and equality. As home to the Nobel Prize, Stockholm is a capital led by forward-looking decision makers, artists, innovators, and scholars.

Eligibility

  • 3.0 cumulative GPA

Important Note

Application Process
There is a dual application process for this program.  (1) Students must apply to IWU for permission to study abroad on this program. You have started the IWU application.  Once you have received permission from IWU, (2) we will nominate you to DIS and send you information to begin their online process.  Please pay close attention to both the IWU and program deadlines, as they may be different.

Academics

During the summer, DIS offers four academic sessions in both Copenhagen and Stockholm.  Select one 3- or 4-week session in a single location, or combine sessions and locations.

With an emphasis on hands-on learning experiences, you have opportunities to simulate real-life scenarios, make connections, and build your résumé.  Theory-based courses include a focus on practice through hands-on learning experiences such as field studies throughout Copenhagen or Stockholm, guest lectures, flipped classrooms, practicums, real-life case studies, student research labs, simulation exercises, skill-building workshops, studios, projects with professional critiques, presentations, and showcases.
