Program Description:

SIT Study Abroad Vietnam: Culture, Social Change, and Development

Examine economic and social change in the cultural context of Vietnam, one of Asia’s most dynamic and rapidly changing countries.

WHY STUDY DEVELOPMENT IN VIETNAM?

Vietnam’s rising status as a nation of extraordinary growth and socioeconomic change is matched only by its ecological and cultural attractions, which include six biosphere reserves and seven UNESCO World Heritage sites. Study Vietnam’s rich history, overcoming decades of war and isolation through social, political, and economic transformation to become one of Asia’s strongest economies. Meet government officials, Vietnamese National Assembly members and speakers with the Fulbright Program Center, as well as local university students who attend SIT lectures and can help you experience their culture.

Observe international and local NGOs such as Oxfam and UNICEF. Experience indigenous music, arts, dress, and traditions. Visit the capital city of Hanoi, the cradle of Vietnamese civilization. Explore Hue, Vietnam’s last imperial city and home to the Forbidden Citadel and its tombs. Trek to the Phong Nha caves system and see the oldest karst mountains of Asia, formed 400 million years ago. Live with a Vietnamese host family in Ho Chi Minh City, the program’s base, and assist in a community-led service project.

Please visit the SIT Study Abroad website for details on the program highlights and details of coursework, educational excursions, and housing.

MONEY MATTERS

SIT is an all-inclusively priced study abroad program – including academics costs, excursions, accommodations and meals, airport transfers, and health insurance. Be sure to discuss how study abroad costs are handled at your school with your study abroad advisor and read the website for more specific information.

SCHOLARSHIPS

SIT has awarded an average of over $1.3 million in scholarships and grants to SIT Study Abroad students in the past three years. All scholarships and grants are need-based. Awards generally range from $500 to $5,000.

IMPORTANT NOTES:

Application Process
There is a dual application process for this program.  (1) Students must apply to for permission to study abroad on this program; you can do this by clicking the "Apply Now" button.  At the same time, (2) students apply directly to the program for admission.  The program application can be accessed on the program website.  Please pay close attention to both the IWU and program deadlines, as they may be different.

Tuition Cost
IWU has a home-school tuition policy, which means that students studying abroad will be billed the regular IWU tuition—unless the study abroad tuition is higher, in which case the student pays that higher cost.  Unless otherwise noted, IWU does not charge room and board for studying abroad; instead, students pay those costs to the program provider.
